Arne Slot has revealed Alexander Isak will return to training ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League showdown with Manchester City.
Isak complained of a groin issue in Liverpool’s 5-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt last month and was withdrawn at half-time of the Champions League fixture.
The Sweden international has subsequently missed games against Brentford, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Real Madrid, with the Reds finding form to win the latter two.
Speaking prior to the Real Madrid clash, Slot raised the possibility of Isak returning to the squad for the Man City fixture. In addition, the striker was called up by Graham Potter for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
In a potential boost for the Reds, Isak is poised to resume full training on Friday, with the view to earning a place in the matchday squad on Sunday.
“He will train for the first time today with the team again after being three weeks out,” Slot confirmed in the pre-match press conference.
“I know that I said three weeks ago his pre-season has ended, so now it’s time to for us to see where he is but I have to come back to those words because if you’re three weeks only with the rehab, that doesn’t bring you back to the levels he was at three weeks ago.
“Although our rehab team is doing an incredible job, but you cannot compare rehab with games of football or training sessions with the team as much as we try to replicate it, that is simply not possible.
“Again I have to say, give him some time.”
Alisson Becker, meanwhile, remains sidelined but is expected back for the Nottingham Forest game after the international break.
Liverpool are also set to be without Jeremie Frimpong for the trip to the Etihad Stadium because of a hamstring injury, while summer signing Giovanni Leoni is a long-term absentee.
Slot added: “Alisson for sure. I don’t expect Jeremie to be fully fit for Forest, but with Allison we expect this.”
