Big-money arrival hobbled off in latest blow
Arne Slot has given an update on Florian Wirtz after the German withdrew from Liverpool’s starting XI against Nottingham Forest with injury.
The summer signing was set to start at the City Ground - where the Reds won 1-0 - but felt his back in the warm-up and was replaced by Curtis Jones in midfield.
As such, it has seen the attacking midfielder sidelined, and he missed the 5-2 win over West Ham at Anfield on Saturday.
Now, it seems he will also sit out the Reds’ two trips to Wolves.
Slot’s side travel to Molineux twice in the space of a week in both the league and the FA Cup, taking on the Premier League’s bottom club on Tuesday and Friday.
“Not anything different than I said after the game,” Slot said of Wirtz on Monday.
“Tomorrow will probably come too soon, and maybe the weekend as well.
“Let’s see how it ends up. We hope to have him back sometime next week, maybe earlier, maybe later.”
Liverpool are already missing four big players longer term, with Alexander Isak, Conor Bradley, Wataru Endo and Giovanni Leoni all out with serious injuries.
Bradley, Endo and Leoni are likely to be out for the remainder of the campaign, while record signing Isak could play again this term as he continues to recover from a broken leg that he suffered against Tottenham before Christmas.
The Reds are still in the hunt for a Champions League place, and benefitted on Sunday from Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat by Arsenal, and Aston Villa losing at Wolves.
They had initially pulled level on points with Manchester United with their win over West Ham at the weekend, but United came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 and move three points clear of their rivals.
