Liverpool head coach Gareth Taylor admitted he admires Tottenham, as the Reds look to climb the table and turn performances into wins.
Taylor has been open about the challenge his side faces this season and why Tottenham have become a benchmark for what he wants his team to grow into.
With Liverpool still searching for their first win in the WSL campaign and Tottenham pushing on inside the top four, the contrast between the two clubs is clear as they prepare to meet again.
Taylor has made no attempt to hide his admiration for the work Tottenham have done over the summer and how that has translated into performances on the pitch. He believes their ambition and recruitment have given them a platform to compete at the top end of the league.
He said: “They are the team we have to look at and admire actually, because they really acted in the summer and invested a lot that has allowed them to get where they are.”
While there have been positive signs Liverpool know that the WSL is unforgiving and that progress must be backed up with points. Taylor has stressed that there is little margin for error and that every fixture carries real importance.
“None of these games coming up are easy but we know we need points and we need to start pushing up the table and we have to win every single thing we can get
“I thought our performance against London City Lionesses was a good start by getting a clean sheet. That gives us a solid platform to build on and go from there.”
For all the focus on organisation Taylor is clear that success will ultimately depend on Liverpool’s ability to influence games higher up the pitch. Creating chances and converting them consistently is an area he wants to see continue to improve.
“We want to win games and to be able to do that we need to be functioning at the top end of the field.
“We have brought in some players who will help us to do that and that is going to help us more and more.”
Liverpool have signed six players this month, with their latest addition being Aurelie Csillag from SC Freiburg.
With Tottenham setting the pace and Liverpool determined to climb away from the lower reaches of the table, this fixture represents more than just another league match. It is a chance for Liverpool to show that the gap can be closed and that the lessons learned from teams they admire can be applied on the pitch.
