Swede hobbled off in Tottenham win over weekend

Alexander Isak is facing a matter of months on the sidelines with a fractured left leg, Liverpool have confirmed.

The striker, who moved to Merseyside from Newcastle in a British-record deal, suffered the injury in the act of scoring the opener as Liverpool beat Tottenham 2-1 on Saturday.

Micky van de Ven caught Isak in a heavy-handed last-ditch tackle as he looked to block the Swede’s shot, but could not prevent him from scoring.

The striker did not hop up to celebrate scoring his second goal in his last 16 appearances, though, and was replaced by Jeremie Frimpong after receiving treatment.

Arne Slot immediately issued a grim prognosis, and Liverpool have now confirmed that scans conducted on Monday revealed a fracture to Isak’s lower left leg.

A club statement read: “Alexander Isak today successfully underwent surgery on the injury he sustained on Saturday.

“The Liverpool striker was injured in a challenge in the process of scoring the opening goal against Tottenham Hotspur and had to be substituted.

“After diagnosis, an operation was completed today on an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture.

“Isak's rehabilitation will now continue at the AXA Training Centre, with no timeframe yet placed on his return.”

Speaking after the Tottenham match, Slot said he had an immediate gut feeling the injury would be severe.

"If a player doesn't even try to come back, that is usually not a good thing but I cannot say anything more than that,” said the Dutchman.

"That is just gut feeling and nothing medical...let's not be too negative yet. We don't know yet. Let's hope he is back with us soon."

This latest injury compounds what has been a miserable first season at Anfield for Isak. He was slow off the mark after missing Liverpool’s pre-season campaign, and was not fully match fit when he eventually joined up.

He then picked up a groin injury which sidelined him for a number of weeks.

Isak has thus far been limited to just three goals in 16 appearances for Liverpool, a record which will not soon improve following this latest setback.
