Liverpool have moved to secure one of the defining figures of their modern midfield, with Dominik Szoboszlai signing a new long-term contract before the start of the 2026-27 season. In a summer that already carries the sense of a reset under Andoni Iraola, the decision to extend Szoboszlai’s stay feels both practical and symbolic.
There are players who give a team energy, and there are players who give it direction. Szoboszlai has increasingly become both. Since arriving from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023, he has developed from a gifted, high-tempo attacking midfielder into a footballer around whom Liverpool can shape the rhythm of games.
The Hungary international now enters his fourth campaign at Anfield with 147 appearances, 28 goals and a growing sense of authority. His first season brought Carabao Cup success, and he was a central presence in Liverpool’s Premier League title-winning side of 2024-25. Last season, amid a more uneven collective year, he produced his strongest individual return, scoring 13 goals and supplying 12 assists across 53 matches.
Those numbers explain why supporters voted him the men’s team’s Standard Chartered Player of the Season. They only tell part of the story. Szoboszlai’s real value lies in his capacity to bind phases together, to run hard enough to support the press, and think quickly enough to give attacks clarity.
His reaction to the deal reflected both gratitude and a familiar competitiveness. “It’s maybe my biggest day,” he said. “There are a couple in front of it – probably when I signed for Liverpool the first one and when I got my baby, of course. But in my football career, I can say this is in the top three. “Very happy. [I] can’t wait to go again and again and again. I’m just happy to be here, as I said many times.”

There was also a revealing edge to his outlook. “There’s always more to come. I’m never happy,” he said. “No, I’m happy with myself but I think I can do even better. I think that’s why I’m sitting here, because that pushed me since I was a kid: that it was never enough. And I’m thinking the same now.”
For Iraola, that mentality matters. Liverpool need renewal, and they need standards. Szoboszlai offers both. He is 25, already proven, and still reaching. “I want to set the example. I want to be an example also for everyone, as much as I can.” Those are the words of a player settling into responsibility.
His final aim remains as expansive as ever. “When I signed, I said I want to win everything. That didn’t change for a little moment either. It stayed the same: I want to win everything that is possible in this country, also let’s say the Champions League. “I’m ready to go for it.” Liverpool, in securing his future, have made clear they are ready too.
