Liverpool have made an approach to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United (h/t Fabrizio Romano).
The Reds are exploring a potential deal worth around £120 million, according to The Athletic.
Newcastle have made it clear that the 25-year-old striker is not available, but Liverpool may be willing to test the Magpies’ resolve.
Isak has impressed since arriving from Real Sociedad. He joined Newcastle for a fee in the region of £60m and has since become a key player.
In 109 appearances for Newcastle, he has scored 62 goals. Last season, he netted 27 goals in 42 games.
That return helped Newcastle secure a top-five finish and qualification for the Champions League. Isak has three years remaining on his current contract.
Liverpool have already broken their transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen this summer.
The German playmaker joined for an initial £100m fee, with another £16m in potential add-ons.
Attention has now turned to strengthening the attack. Darwin Nunez could be on his way out, with Napoli and Al-Hilal keeping an eye on his situation.
Federico Chiesa has also been linked as a possible option for the central attacking role.
In terms of alternatives to Isak, Liverpool have considered Hugo Ekitike of Eintracht Frankfurt. However, they are yet to make formal contact with the German club.
Newcastle are also working on a move for Ekitike, but have not reached an agreement with Eintracht.
Isak’s style of play makes him a perfect fit for Liverpool’s system. He is tall, quick, skilful and can finish with both feet.
He can lead the line, play in a strike duo or operate from wide positions. His ability to hold the ball and link up play adds more value to his game.
His intelligence off the ball, smart positioning, and strong work rate make him one of the best all-round forwards in Europe today.
