Liverpool and Newcastle Transfer Race Takes Another Twist

Newcastle Search for New Attacking Edge

Newcastle United’s summer rebuild appears to have entered a familiar, slightly bruising phase. According to Daily Mail, the club are showing interest in Cologne winger Said El Mala while maintaining contact over Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo.

Both players fit the profile of a club trying to refresh its attack with youth, pace and flexibility. Fernandez-Pardo, in particular, offers positional variety, able to play as a striker or on either wing. That matters because Newcastle have already lost Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, leaving a gap that cannot be filled by sentiment alone.

El Mala brings a different type of intrigue. The 19-year-old Germany Under-21 international scored 13 goals and delivered five assists last season, numbers that immediately explain why clubs are watching. Fast, skilful and capable of scoring from distance, he carries the outline of a modern Premier League wide forward.

Liverpool Waiting in Familiar Territory

What gives this story its extra bite is Liverpool’s presence in the background. Daily Mail report that Liverpool are “waiting in the wings” if they fail to land priority targets Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig or Bradley Barcola of Paris St Germain.

That wording will not be warmly received on Tyneside. Newcastle have already felt the sharp end of Liverpool’s transfer timing this summer. They missed out on Victor Munoz after agreeing a fee with Osasuna, only for Liverpool to activate the winger’s £34.6m buy-out clause and complete the deal.

In transfer terms, that sort of move lingers. It changes the temperature around every shared target. Newcastle may like El Mala and Fernandez-Pardo, yet Liverpool’s interest turns pursuit into poker.

Fernandez-Pardo Offers Flexibility

Fernandez-Pardo feels like the more immediately logical option for Newcastle. Daily Mail Sport revealed in May that the Lille forward was already on their radar, and his performances for Belgium at the World Cup are only likely to increase attention.

A forward who can operate across the line gives managers options. In a season shaped by injuries, rotation and fixture congestion, that versatility has real value. Newcastle do not simply need a Gordon replacement, they need a player who can help alter the shape of games.

For Liverpool, Fernandez-Pardo may sit lower on the list, but that does not make him irrelevant. If Diomande or Barcola prove unattainable, the Lille forward becomes part of the wider market calculation.

El Mala Brings Risk and Reward

El Mala’s situation is more layered. Brighton tried and failed to convince him to join before Brentford had a £43m offer accepted by Cologne. The move collapsed after his mother, who is also his representative, decided it was not right. She had also wanted a deal involving his older brother Malek, a centre forward.

That tells clubs two things. First, Cologne know the market value is already serious. Second, any negotiation may involve more than just fee and wages.

Newcastle have also been offered Bayer Leverkusen winger Kerim Alajbegovic, although Daily Mail report they are unlikely to pursue him as things stand. Arsenal, Aston Villa and Leeds have also shown interest, while clubs in Italy are watching him too.

For Newcastle, the challenge is clarity. For Liverpool, the benefit is patience. Once again, they can observe, assess and decide when to move.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

From a Liverpool fan’s perspective, this report feels like another sign that the club are working from a layered attacking shortlist rather than chasing one name in isolation.

That is encouraging, provided the hierarchy is clear. If Yan Diomande and Bradley Barcola are the primary targets, then supporters will want Liverpool to act with conviction. Fernandez-Pardo and El Mala may be exciting, but they feel more like contingency options than transformative signings.

The Munoz deal also matters psychologically. Liverpool beating Newcastle to a player after a fee had been agreed showed speed, aggression and market awareness. Those are qualities fans have been demanding for years. The danger, of course, is that Liverpool become too opportunistic and lose sight of squad balance.

El Mala’s numbers are eye-catching, 13 goals and five assists at 19 should make any recruitment department pay attention. Fernandez-Pardo’s flexibility is appealing too, especially if Liverpool are planning for a more fluid front line after Mohamed Salah’s departure.

Still, the key question remains simple. Are Liverpool adding depth, or replacing elite output? Those are very different missions. If Diomande is the statement target, then the club should not drift too far from that standard.

Newcastle’s frustration may be Liverpool’s opportunity again. The market is moving, and Liverpool appear ready to wait for the right opening.
