Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is clearly surplus to requirements at Anfield, with Arne Slot sticking to his trusted pairing and barely using the English centre-half.
The Liverpool star has played only 119 minutes of football this term, and a move away from the Merseyside giants is being considered.
According to Milan Live, AC Milan are still interested in his services.
Despite missing out on Gomez when talks with Liverpool failed to progress, the Serie A table toppers could return for him in January 2026.
“If the Reds acquire a replacement, they’ll give the green light to his departure.” Liverpool reportedly value him at between €10 and €15 million.
Virgil Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate have been Slot’s go-to central defensive pairing since the start of last season, but they look incredibly shaky this term.
Konate’s form in particular is worrying. He has not reached his previous levels, and his contract situation does not help.
With Giovanni Leoni injured and more clubs entering the frame for defensive target Marc Guehi, Liverpool letting go of Gomez makes no sense.
Instead of offloading him, Liverpool should be thinking of how to reintegrate Gomez into the first-team picture.
Slot needs to remember that Gomez once forged a rock-solid partnership with van Dijk. They had an excellent understanding.
At their best, the pair formed a defensive wall that allowed Liverpool to play with confidence and control.
Right now, that same sense of composure and steel is missing from the back line.
Konate’s dip in form has left the defence vulnerable, and it would be a mistake to discard an experienced, versatile player who still has plenty to offer.
Slot should give Gomez a fair run of games ahead of Konate and assess his contribution before making any final decisions.
At the very least, Liverpool should keep the 28-year-old until the end of the season.
