Liverpool were knocked out of the League Cup after losing 3-0 to Crystal Palace at Anfield on Wednesday evening.

They began the game on the front foot, with Rio Ngumoha causing problems for Palace’s defence. He had a shot blocked inside seven minutes before bending a shot wide of the post.

Federico Chiesa should have given Liverpool the lead before the half-hour mark, but goalkeeper Walter Benitez saved his effort towards the bottom corner.

Ismaila Sarr gave Palace the lead in the 41st minute, beating the goalkeeper with a low finish.

The Senegal international doubled the Eagles’ lead with a gorgeous finish on the stroke of half-time, extending his tally against Liverpool to seven goals in nine games.

Despite Liverpool dominating possession early in the second half, Sarr registered the first attempt, forcing goalkeeper Freddie Woodman to make a save.

Liverpool’s woes deepened in the 78th minute when substitute Amara Nallo was shown a red card for a last-man challenge.

Justin Devenny had a good opportunity to add to Palace’s advantage, but sent his effort wide.

Yeremy Pino added the icing on the cake in the 87th minute, firing a low strike beyond Woodman’s reach.

According to OptaJoe, this was the first time since 1934 that Liverpool have lost a domestic cup match at Anfield by conceding three goals without scoring.

Liverpool have lost six of their last seven games across competitions and are now winless in their last four games against Palace.
