Liverpool Defensive Concerns Grow as Frimpong and Bradley Questions Dominate Anfield Index Discussion

Liverpool’s defensive picture is coming under increasing scrutiny ahead of the new season, with Anfield Index discussion focusing sharply on the state of the back line, the fitness of key players and the lack of clarity around incoming reinforcements.

In a detailed conversation on Anfield Index, Dave Davis and Trev Downey laid out their concerns in blunt terms, with the right side of defence and the centre-back unit emerging as the most pressing themes.

Frimpong situation leaves Liverpool short at right back

He said, “we were going to do something about right-back because poor old Connor Bradley the stories were going around before the end of last campaign that his his injury was worse than had been expected and it was going to drag on”.

Dave was equally direct. “Jeremy Frimpong is not a right back,” he said. He then underlined how thin the options currently look by adding, “Well, as it stands right now, who else is there?”

There was also a specific warning over Frimpong’s physical condition. Dave recalled, “Iraola said there the other day, he asked for the sub, but I don’t think it’s an injury. It’s just some overload. I hope he’s not injured in that way.” He then pointed to a previous pattern, saying, “the first game of last season against Bournemouth at home, Frimpong limped off and Slot did the whole we don’t think it’s too bad. You know, we caught it early and then we didn’t see him until after the international break and a little bit past then. And he had muscle injuries galore last season as well.”

That is why the key takeaway from the conversation felt so stark. In Dave’s words, “we’re almost praying Jeremy Frimpong is fit to play right back because who else is there?”

Bradley return remains uncertain

Bradley was discussed with sympathy, but also realism. Trev stressed that even if he does return, there is no certainty over what level he will hit straight away. “Connor Bradley we welcome back may not be the Connor Bradley who we saw at his best,” he said.

Dave expanded on that concern with a series of hard truths. “we’re not going to see Conor Bradley for a while and even if we do see him how long is it going to take him to get up to speed and fully functioning.” He followed that with an assessment that leaves little room for complacency, “Connor Bradley before this didn’t have a good injury record. That’s just factual.”

For Liverpool, that means the right-back issue is not simply about one short-term absence. It is about whether the club can responsibly begin the campaign with Frimpong as the immediate answer and Bradley as the hoped-for solution later on.

Time remains, but pressure is mounting

As things stand, the discussion on Anfield Index reflected a squad still needing defensive help, and fast. Frimpong is being talked about as a necessity at right back, Bradley’s return remains clouded by uncertainty, and the centre-back options look fragile. In that context, the warning from Trev felt like the line that best captured the current mood, “it’s dafted. It’s negligent.”
