For some time, Liverpool fans have been convinced that Alexander Isak was a certainty, that this summer transfer window he would fill the desperately needed spot of number one striker at Anfield.
It was almost seamless, Liverpool fans moving aside Arsenal fans.
I think I know the date for sure when this shift happened, indeed, the time as well.
It was getting on for 6.30pm, Sunday 16 March 2025.
Newcastle United dominating Liverpool throughout, Alexander Isak the biggest threat on the pitch the entire match, unlucky to have one goal chalked off and then scored the winner.
Up until that day, that point, Arsenal fans were saying it was a foregone conclusion that Alexander Isak would be their new striker for 2025/26. That there was no way Newcastle United could hold onto the world class striker this summer, not when the mighty Gunners came calling. Especially they said, with Alexander Isak being a lifelong Arsenal fan, despite not one bit of evidence to back this up.
Then Liverpool lost that League Cup final to Newcastle United four months ago and it was suddenly Liverpool fans swamping social media. Liverpool fans saying it was a foregone conclusion that Alexander Isak would be their new striker for 2025/26. That there was no way Newcastle United could hold onto the world class striker, not when the mighty Scousers came calling. Especially they said, with Alexander Isak being a lifelong Liverpool fan, despite not one bit of evidence to back this up.
This is the world we now live in.
Fans (and ‘journalists’) make things up to get attention, fantasy becomes reality, every piece of invented nonsense in the media is ‘proof’ that Alexander Isak is definitely signing for Liverpool, photoshopped images of Isak in a Liverpool shirt and so on.
Look, even ‘transfer window specialist’ journalists on Twitter/X say Alexander Isak is definitely coming to Anfield according to their insider sources (waiter in their local Pizza place in Rome) what could possibly go wrong?
Fast forward to this past week.
Newcastle United allegedly putting in a bid for Hugo Ekitike to come to St James’ Park and play alongside Alexander Isak, that reported £70m bid seemingly turned down by Eintracht Frankfurt. Though neither club officially commented.
News of that NUFC bid for Ekitike immediately followed by Liverpool telling the media that they really want to sign Alexander Isak and would pay £120m+ for him, if Newcastle United would sell him.
Cue Liverpool fans even more swamping social media and online generally, this was ‘proof’ apparently that Alexander Isak was definitely coming to Anfield. Reckoning no way Liverpool would be doing this if a deal wasn’t going to happen, that this was ‘further’ proof that as the Liverpool fans had ‘known’, Alexander Isak desperate to leave Newcastle and join Liverpool.
Liverpool fans believing that clearly Newcastle United were trying to buy Ekitike as Isak’s replacement, that ‘obviously’ there was no way Newcastle could afford to buy Hugo Ekitike AND keep Alexander Isak.
For Liverpool fans, things very quickly unravelled from there.
Within a blink of an eye, Liverpool entering talks to buy Hugo Ekitike themselves.
An absolute classic.
A very clear case of Liverpool fans totally duped by their club.
The club able to point to the great lengths they had gone to, trying to sign Alexander Isak.
LOOK they said, we told the media that we would be willing to pay £120m+ for Alexander Isak.
When you look at what the media reported when fed this nonsense from Liverpool, it becomes apparent that they didn’t even contact Newcastle United, never mind actually put an offer in. You know, what you actually do when you have any serious intention of actually trying to buy a player.
Instead, Liverpool made Newcastle United aware of this supposed willingness to pay £120m+ by putting a message in the media. Yes, that’s the way to properly conduct transfer business…
The thing is, the Merseyside club are absolutely relying on their fans’ willingness to want to believe positive transfer news, a desperation for Liverpool fans to believe their club are trying to do whatever it takes to sign Alexander Isak.
When the reality is clearly anything but that.
Instead, their club clearly hoping they can dupe as many naive Liverpool fans as possible with this nonsense.
To feed that story to the media of willing to pay £120m+ for Alexander Isak, only to then instantly enter talks to buy Hugo Ekitike, surely tells you everything.
If Liverpool had simply approached Eintracht Frankfurt to buy the talented but raw and inexperienced Hugo Ekitike to become their number one striker, Ekitike with only one full season playing first team football at a decent level, they knew fine well it would have sparked a very negative reaction from Liverpool fans.
I know many Liverpool fans will see through this nonsense from their club.
However, I also see countless Liverpool fans who are now divided into two distinct camps.
Those that are convinced Liverpool seriously tried to buy Alexander Isak but are now buying Hugo Ekitike instead.
Those that are convinced Liverpool are now going to sign Hugo Ekitike AND Alexander Isak.
