Liverpool and Real Madrid are two of the most recognisable football teams in the world.

Both teams have won many Champions League and domestic trophies throughout their history but that doesn't mean that they can't go through blips.

Both clubs have gone through a bit of a rough patch this term as they both managed to miss out on their domestic titles and failed to make to the Champions League final.

This lack of form has resulted in Arne Slot and Alvaro Arebola's men being linked with several players this summer with each team looking to improve their ranks one way or another.

Several players have already been linked with most clubs and now, it feels like Liverpool have the perfect chance to prise a centre-back right from Real Madrid's palms.

Josko Gvardiol has been offered to Real Madrid

One area that both teams need to reinforce is their defence.

Each of them spent a hefty chunk of change on new defenders over the summer but, on more than one occasion, both clubs have been let down by their defence.

This has resulted in several players being linked with a move and now, according to Spanish outlet AS, Manchester City's Josko Gvardiol has been offered to Real as a potential option this summer.

"His [Gvardiol's] contract expires on June 30, 2028. At the moment, there's no movement to finalize a deal, but the Croatian's agents are looking for a possible destination, and Real Madrid is one of the clubs he likes. Bernardo Silva has also been suggested," they wrote.

"Josko Gvardiol has been offered to Real Madrid. He is neither the first nor will he be the last player to express interest in joining the club as the transfer window approaches, a market that is shaping up to be heavily dominated by Real Madrid.

"The move has caused quite a stir at Valdebebas. The club's priority is to strengthen its defense, especially at center-back, but they weren't expecting such a gesture from one of the most sought-after defenders in European football.

"Real Madrid's need for change in order to rebuild a squad severely weakened by the season's events fuels these kinds of moves. The truth is, Gvardiol's name has been on the Real Madrid sporting management's radar for some time.

"In fact, before his move to Manchester City in the summer of 2023, the Croatian was considered a possible signing, but the €90 million offered by the English club secured one of the biggest transfers of the time and scared off any other team that might have wanted to sign him."

There have been times throughout the 2025-26 season that Liverpool's backline has been catastrophic.

The sheer number of mistakes that players such as Ibrahima Konate, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Jeremie Frimpong have all made this term have been close to unforgiveable.

That's why someone such as Gvardiol would be a perfect player for them to target.

The Croatian has always talked up Virgil van Dijk and has even said that Liverpool would be his "dream club" in the past.

His Premier League experience coupled with his versatility to play as a centre-back or a left-back would all be very useful for Liverpool next term.

However, since he currently plays for Manchester City, it's unlikely that they'd give him to the Reds cheaply, which could be a slight issue.

But, seeing as though his agents are already offering him to other clubs, there's no reason why the Reds can't throw their hat into the ring and try their luck.
