Liverpool Identify This Inter Milan Defender As A Target: What Will He Bring To Anfield? | OneFootball

In a recent interview with Football Insider, former scout Mick Brown revealed that Liverpool have identified Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni as a target. Brown said,

“Bastoni is a player I’ve always been a big admirer of.

“He’s a fantastic defender and has been brilliant for Inter Milan for a long period of time now, so it’s no surprise these types of clubs are looking at him.

“Liverpool have been keeping a close eye on him because they see him as somebody who would be an improvement on what they’ve got at the moment.

“He would be a great asset to any club, and one I would certainly recommend they go for.

“They’re not sure what’s happening with Konate, that’s still very much up in the air, and Van Dijk hasn’t looked like his usual dominant self this season.

“So it’s the type of deal Liverpool have to be considering, because they have to be prepared for any possibility if they might need to bring players in.”

Bastoni’s Impressive Form In Serie A This Season

The 26-year-old is having a solid campaign at the Milan club after he put in a string of impressive displays at the heart of their backline. Bastoni has played in 20 matches for Inter this season, netting one goal and grabbing five assists across all competitions.

The Italian talent has been a rock at the back as he has made 31 tackles, ten blocks, 13 interceptions and 43 clearances in Serie A. He has even distributed possession from inside his half based on his pass completion rate of 85% in the top tier of Italian football (stats via fbref.com).

What Will Bastoni Bring To Liverpool?

Bastoni is a tough-tackling defender who can time his challenges well to make some important interceptions for his team inside his half. He usually clears his lines when the opposition are on the front foot and is a tidy passer of the ball as well.

We can expect Bastoni to bring more bite and steel to Liverpool head coach Arne Slot’s defence. He is good enough to challenge for a regular first-team spot at the Merseyside club in the coming seasons.

At 26, Bastoni has his peak years ahead of him, which makes him a worthy target for Slot to pursue this winter or next summer. Furthermore, he would serve as an ideal, long-term successor to Virgil Van Dijk at Liverpool.
