Liverpool’s Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid was meant to be about Alexander Isak. Instead, it was Virgil van Dijk’s towering header that stole the headlines and sealed a 3-2 win. Yet the real story might have been brewing off the pitch, with Rafa Benitez adding a dose of intrigue before kick-off.
Isak’s move to Liverpool was the biggest transfer saga of the summer and, according to Benitez, one that Newcastle may live to regret. Speaking to TNT Sports, the former Reds manager lifted the lid on what he had been told.

“I will tell you a secret, talking to Newcastle United people, they are missing him,” Benitez said.
“He was doing so well, he was adapting to the style, to the game. He is clever with his movements; he can play in the middle or he can go wide. He runs in behind, and he can dribble.
“So I think it will be a great signing for Liverpool and a big miss for Newcastle United.”
It is a reminder that Isak’s impact at St James’ Park was more than statistical. He was a symbol of their project, an emblem of their ambition. Now, Liverpool have taken that energy for themselves.
Wednesday night was the first real glimpse of what Isak can offer under Arne Slot. He started up front, stretched Atletico’s defence and linked play, but did not get his name on the scoresheet. The Reds still found a way to win late, just as they have done five times already this season.
This knack for dramatic finishes has thrilled fans, but there is a growing sense of jeopardy attached. Relying on stoppage-time goals is not a sustainable model, no matter how euphoric it feels at Anfield.
Liverpool have invested over £400million in fresh talent since last summer. Hugo Ekitike has impressed, yet others such as Milos Kerkez have struggled to find rhythm. The result has been a team that often needs the final act of the drama to show its quality.
With Isak now in the side, the expectation is that things will start to click. His movement, intelligence and versatility should bring the kind of cutting edge that allows Liverpool to put games to bed earlier.
For all the optimism, the reality is clear: the margin for error is slim. If Liverpool keep leaving their wins until the final moments, their luck could eventually run out. For now though, they have a new striker, a secret shared by Rafa, and a sense that the best is yet to come.
