With the Reds taking a well-earned and timely break following a disappointing week it was time for the Reds of yesteryear to take centre stage as the Liverpool Legends returned to Anfield to take on their Chelsea counterparts some 20 years on from an epic Champions League encounter between the two.
Among the familiar faces returning are the likes of Sami Hyypia, Igor Biscan, Jerzy Dudek, Peter Crouch and former captain extraordinaire Steven Gerrard as a host of fan favourites once again dust off their boots in order to raise money for the LFC Foundation and Forever Reds.

Speaking ahead of the match, Foundation director Matt Parish, Crouch and Liverpool Women’s record goalscorer Natasha Dowie sat down in front of the media for a press conference to discuss the match and what it means for the charity.
Crouch on returning to Anfield: “My little boy has just taken a huge liking to Liverpool. Ye, he carried me in the three years I was here.
Dowie on being the first woman to appear in the Legends: “Selfishly this is going to be the biggest crowd I’ve ever played in front of, I’ve got some friends and family coming up. it’s a pinch-yourself moment.”
Crouch on Liverpool: It’s unbelievably special. You see a lot of former players end up supporting the club. I definitely have a connection to the club and always will. It’ll be massive for me, for my little boy, to see me pulling on the red shirt.”
Parish on the match and the impact: “It’s our biggest event, the fact we’ve got just over 59,000 sold already, our supporters are a different level. Every pound we raise goes to support our work. It’s hugely important for us.”
Crouch on Istanbul: “That game is one of the reasons I signed, I was away with my first England squad in the US, New York I think. I remember my agent calling me and saying are you sitting down and telling me.”
Crouch on Chelsea rivalry: “It was so intense. As you know Liverpool have that connection with the Champions League. I spoke to Robert Huth and I said please don’t start kicking me – he said if you don’t do anything silly you won’t get hurt.”
Crouch on Liverpool as a city: “I’ve got lots of friends up here, I see the work that’s getting done, they do so much work, it’s a great fun day out for the fans.”
Parish on the foundation work: “We set out a five-year strategy earlier this year and originally wanted to help 300,000 people but that quickly got increased to 500,00, not exactly sure where we’re finding that extra 200,000 from now but we want to help as many people as we can here but also internationally.”
Dowie on the occasion: “It’s about the bigger picture but from my point of view there will definitely be some butterflies, I’m looking forward to it, just embracing the occasion, embracing this, meeting the rest and training. I’m lucky to be an ambassador and be able to go to every home game to hear the fans, so You’ll Never Walk Alone will definitely be extra special.”

LFC Foundation is the official charity of Liverpool FC and supported over 127,000 people last year through its programmes, delivering 18,000 sessions and events across 300 community venues, including 199 schools.
This is the ninth Legends’ game so far with over £7.5million raised in vital funds from the previous eight, with funds benefitting people both in the Liverpool City Region and Internationally
Funds from the game will help support even more people in the future, and the LFC Foundation recently launched its ambitious new strategy which aims to support 500,000 per year by the year 2030.
