There may already be a genius double deal lined-up for Xabi Alonso at Liverpool.
It now feels like a matter of when not if Arne Slot will be relieved of his duties. The reality is that the Dutchman is completely out of depth in his role.
There's no turning back from winning only five of your last 18 Premier League matches, nor going on a run at Liverpool where you lose nine games from 12.
Slot has lost his credibility, he has lost his trust and quite simply there is little faith in the Dutchman within the supporter base.
Liverpool may have some squad issues but the results are quite simply not good enough.

All of this has been happening simultaneously as Xabi Alonso has become available on the market. So, it also feels like a matter of when not if Alonso returns to Anfield and becomes the club's new head-coach to replace Slot.
Of course, it remains to be seen when it happens. A lot hinges on where Liverpool finish and what happens from now until the end of the season.
If things start to get even more dire, if that is possible, Slot could lose his job midway through the season. If things improve, he may last until the summer at which point the hierarchy will have to let him go.
Long-term Liverpool cannot be preparing for life under Slot. Alonso seems like the perfect option, and it feels like Richard Hughes has already been preparing and lining up moves to suit the Spaniard's system.
Alonso famously liked to play a 3-4-2-1 at Leverkusen, with bombing wing-backs and attacking midfielders slotting in behind the no.9.
Liverpool don't really have that many archetypal no.10s at the moment. Florian Wirtz is really the only option.
