Reds have another player in their sights as they ramp up pursuits of Wirtz and Milos Kerkez, having already signed Jeremie Frimpong
Liverpool have reportedly tabled a third huge offer to sign Florian Wirtz.
The Premier League champions have been locked in talks for weeks now over a blockbuster deal for the reigning Bundesliga player of the season, having already signed his Bayer Leverkusen team-mate Jeremie Frimpong in a £29.5million transfer last month as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is joining Real Madrid early for £8.4m ahead of the Club World Cup.
Liverpool were said to have seen two significant bids for Wirtz rejected so far, the second of which was believed to total a club-record £109m, including add-ons.
Negotiations between the two clubs have continued in recent days and will carry on over the weekend, with rumours that Leverkusen are holding out for a total package for their top asset worth up to €150m (£126m), which would see him become the most expensive signing in the history of English football, plus potentially wanting either Jarell Quansah or Harvey Elliott as part of the deal.
Reports from multiple outlets including The Times late on Friday night stated that Liverpool had now tabled a third approach for Wirtz worth £113m, including £100m guaranteed and a further £13m in potential add-ons.
It remains to be seen if that will be enough of a compromise to satisfy Leverkusen, with Wirtz having apparently made it clear that he only wants to move to Anfield after long-standing interest from the likes of Manchester City and Bayern Munich.
Wirtz has this week publicly hit out at claims that he wants to take the No10 shirt at Liverpool that currently belongs to influential midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, though that is apparently the position that manager Arne Slot plans for him to play in.
Earlier on Friday, it was reported that FC Cologne were hoping to claim part of the transfer fee for Wirtz, who started and scored for Germany in their 2-1 Nations League semi-final defeat by Portugal in Munich on Wednesday night, following his controversial move to Leverkusen as a teenager in 2020.
Liverpool are also trying to complete a deal for Hungarian left-back Milos Kerkez, though have yet to agree a fee with Bournemouth for the defender.
The Daily Mirror have reported that the Reds are also hoping to conclude the £1.5m signing of Kerkez’s compatriot Armin Pecsi, a 20-year-old goalkeeper for Puskas Akademia in the Hungarian top-flight.
There have already been changes in the goalkeeping department at Liverpool this summer, with Alisson Becker’s long-time deputy Caoimhin Kelleher replacing Brentford No1 Mark Flekken - who has joined Leverkusen - in an £18m deal and Georgian international Giorgi Mamardashvili arriving as part of a £29m transfer agreed with Valencia last year.
