Liverpool make major moves to replace Cody Gakpo

Is Cody Gakpo losing his place at Liverpool? A series of reports certainly suggest so.

Cody Gakpo signed a new contract at Liverpool in 2025, a reward for his efforts in the title-winning campaign. However, this season hasn’t gone to plan.

Gakpo’s output fell dramatically, with 10 fewer goals this season. But more than that, he’s a casualty of Liverpool’s lack of pace.

Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez both left last summer, while Mo Salah has struggled badly. It means this squad doesn’t have any real pace or direct running up top - and that must be rectified in the transfer window.

Liverpool seem to believe that it’s Gakpo’s place on the left where they can find it. They’ve been linked with a crazy number of left-wingers: Yan Diomande, Bradley Barcola, Said El Mala and now Abde Ezzalzouli.

Local reports in Sevilla report that Ezzalzouli is a legitimate target, too.

It’s difficult to see what happens to Gakpo and his place in the team if Liverpool do go big and sign a new left-winger. He certainly won’t be sold so soon after the new contract, but where’s his role?

It’s an interesting one and promises to be one of the major stories this summer.

Cody Gakpo: Situation Summary

Liverpool Performance and Stats

As of 28 April 2026, Cody Gakpo remains a versatile attacking option for Liverpool, though he has struggled for consistent output this season. The 26-year-old has made 32 Premier League appearances, tallying six goals and five assists. Recently, he delivered a standout performance in a 2–1 victory against Everton on 19 April, providing the assist for Mohamed Salah’s opener. However, his overall impact has been described as inconsistent, particularly when deployed on the left wing. He missed the 2–1 loss to Manchester City on 26 April for the arrival of his newborn baby but returned to training shortly after.

Transfer Speculation and Future

Gakpo’s future at Anfield is increasingly uncertain as Liverpool reportedly plan a squad overhaul. Reports from late March 2026 suggest the club is seeking more consistent delivery from its wide players and may consider offers for the Dutchman to fund new signings. While he has three years remaining on his contract, he is no longer viewed as an untouchable starter under Arne Slot.

International Standing

Gakpo remains a key attacking threat for Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands squad heading into the 2026 World Cup. He featured in recent friendlies against Norway and Ecuador and is expected to lead the Dutch line in Group F this June.
