Andoni Iraola has pledged to give his Liverpool charges a fresh start during their first preseason together.

The Basque tactician has been announced as Arne Slot’s successor in the Anfield dugout - and will get to work in a matter of days with his squad.

The initial group will have some absentees owing to participation at the FIFA World Cup. A few players will therefore be handed a Liverpool lifeline before Iraola and sporting director Richard Hughes make a call on their future.

And one player in that camp is Harvey Elliott.

The 23-year-old in an ideal world would be an Aston Villa player by now. He moved to Villa Park with the intention of completing a permanent £35m transfer following a season on loan.

But it was clear early on that Unai Emery would do all he could to dodge that obligation. Elliott has suffered a wasted season - returning to Anfield for preseason with only one year left on his contract.

And should he fail to convince his new head coach of his merits - either out wide or in midfield - then he could be on his way.

According to a new report on Sky Sports News the England under-21 legend is being targetted as part of Crystal Palace’s summer transfer refit.

New manager Pierre Sage is now in place for the Europa Conference League champions - with a move for Elliott said to be in the offing.

Harvey Elliott will have chance to impress

“Palace are also understood to be monitoring Harvey Elliott’s situation at Liverpool,” the report reads.

“Elliott will be given the chance to stake his claim in the Liverpool squad under new head coach Andoni Iraola.”

Elliott joined Liverpool as a teenager following their UEFA Champions League success back in 2019. The talented left-footer has been part of two Premier League title-winning squads but has rarely won over his coaches as a starter.

He is a boyhood Liverpool fan who would no doubt love to enjoy a long and successful career on Merseyside. But he will also be realistic about his prospects and if Elliott cannot pass his impending audition then he may be set for a move back south.
