Liverpool often give players a fair shot at proving themselves, but one that probation period is up, the recruitment team can be quite ruthless in their assessment of who should be sent on their way.
If you're unable to get into the first-team, either through failing to impress Arne Slot or through injury struggles, the club will cut their losses rather than allow the situation to continue. The stakes are high.
Last summer, it was decided that Tyler Morton needed to be given an opportunity elsewhere, Jarell Quansah got the same treatment and Harvey Elliott would also have gone if his loan had worked out.
One player who fans have rarely seen in recent years might be about to follow in their footsteps.
Young midfield talent Stefan Bajcetic hasn't been able to catch a break at Liverpool and it's been devastating to watch his career pan out the way it has so far, even though he's still only 21 years old.

The Spaniard has 986 senior minutes played for the Reds since he joined in December 2020 from Celta Vigo, and while he's extremely highly-rated, it doesn't look as though he'll succeed with us.
In 2021/22 he missed 18 games with a back injury, a 15-game absence then followed in the 2022/23 season because an abductor injury, then came a calf tear which kept him out for 47 games and after two loan spells at RB Leipzig and Las Palmas last season, he's now out with a major hamstring issue.
The midfielder would be the ideal understudy for Ryan Gravenberch, replacing Wataru Endo - who is not just out of favour with Arne Slot, but also nearing the end of his career now he's 32 years old.
In the past, he's been described as a 'Thiago regen' because of how light he is on his feet, gliding across the pitch and keeping his composure on the half-turn when the opposition has him boxed in.
He's likely been kept around this long because Slot sees something special in him. It was hoped that he could break into the first-team this season following an impressive pre-season tour, but the injury hasn't allowed that to happen yet. Since he's still only 21, it's possible that he may get more chances.
But time is surely running out, with his contract only in place until 2027, by which time the Reds will have needed to see a real turnaround in his fortunes to consider giving him another long-term deal.
And letting a young players with bags of potential leave on a free transfer isn't likely to be a popular move either, so this summer is going to be crunch time, if his fate isn't sealed in January instead.
Through little fault of his own, Bajcetic is under the cosh. There's a real danger he might be sold on.
