Mohamed Salah revealed he urged Arne Slot to relieve him of some of his defensive duties in order to find his best form in attack for Liverpool.

The Egyptian was on target as Liverpool beat Tottenham 5-1 at Anfield on Sunday to be crowned Premier League champions with four matches to spare.

That goal took Salah past Sergio Aguero as the Premier League’s top international goalscorer, while his tally for the season now stands at 33 goals and 23 assists in all competitions.

He has the most goal involvements of any player in Premier League history in a 38-game season.

Asked about the different role he has played under Slot compared to when Jurgen Klopp was in the Liverpool dugout, Salah said: "You can see the numbers.

“Now I don't have to defend much. The tactics are quite different. I said 'as long as you rest me defensively I will provide offensively', so I am glad that I did. He listened a lot and you can see the numbers.

"When you play in the Premier League you have to defend but I said that I can gamble and somehow I can make a difference. My number of assists shows that, you can create chances as well."

It is the second Premier League title Salah has won as a Liverpool player, to go with the club’s Champions League success in 2019.

The Reds’ league title victory in 2020 came when celebrations were restricted due to Covid, and Salah spoke of his relief to get the chance to be crowned champions at Anfield in front of a full stadium.

“It is incredible to win this with our fans,” Salah said.

“This is 100% better than last time [in 2020], especially with the fans. We have a different group now so to show we can do it again is something special.

“Watching the Arsenal-Crystal Palace game I didn’t want to win it then. I wanted an experience we haven’t had before.”
