Liverpool’s summer already had the air of a turning point. Now, according to information from TEAMtalk, Cody Gakpo’s future has become another thread in an increasingly complex Anfield rebuild.
The Dutch forward is reportedly concerned about his role under incoming head coach Andoni Iraola, with TEAMtalk claiming Gakpo fears falling behind teenage winger Rio Ngumoha in the pecking order. That is a remarkable sentence in itself. Gakpo arrived from PSV Eindhoven as an established international, a versatile forward with pedigree and polish. Ngumoha, by contrast, represents promise, raw excitement and the sort of internal belief that can shift a club’s transfer thinking.
Liverpool are not actively seeking to sell Gakpo, according to the report, and that distinction matters. This is not framed as a player being pushed out. It is instead a situation shaped by ambition, squad evolution and the uncomfortable reality of elite football, where status can change quickly when a new manager arrives.
Iraola’s arrival will inevitably reset the hierarchy. Every player begins again, in theory, but not always from the same starting line. TEAMtalk report that Ngumoha is expected to become a key part of Iraola’s plans, with the teenager viewed internally as one of the brightest talents to emerge from Liverpool in years.

That leaves Gakpo in a difficult place. At 27, he is not a developing squad option. He is in the years when a forward wants rhythm, trust and regular football. If he senses that his minutes may shrink, it is hardly surprising that his camp is assessing the market.
The list of interested clubs is significant. TEAMtalk name Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Besiktas, Fenerbahce and RB Leipzig as sides made aware of Gakpo’s situation.
That does not mean a transfer is inevitable. It does mean Liverpool have options if their stance softens. Gakpo still has value, still has admirers and still has the tactical profile to interest clubs across several leagues.
RB Leipzig’s presence in the conversation may be the most intriguing element. Liverpool continue to push for Yan Diomande, the highly rated winger valued in the region of €150m, and TEAMtalk suggest Gakpo’s situation could potentially become relevant as discussions with the Red Bull group continue.
If Liverpool are truly determined to land Diomande, then this becomes a bigger story than one player’s uncertainty. It becomes a question of how Liverpool reshape their forward line for the next cycle.
Gakpo has quality, intelligence and experience. Yet Diomande represents something different, explosive potential, long term upside and the sort of attacking spark clubs increasingly pay extraordinary fees to secure.
For Liverpool, the calculation is delicate. Selling Gakpo too cheaply would be poor business. Keeping an unsettled player in a reduced role would bring its own risk. Using him as leverage in a wider deal, if possible, may offer a neat solution.
This is not yet a transfer saga with a conclusion. It is, though, a warning that Liverpool’s new era will not be gentle. Iraola’s arrival, Ngumoha’s emergence and Diomande’s pursuit all point towards a sharper, younger, more aggressive attacking future. Gakpo may still have a place in it, but for the first time, that place feels uncertain.
From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this report lands somewhere between excitement and unease. Gakpo is a very good player, and it would be easy to forget that amid the rush towards the next big thing. He has shown he can play across the front line, link play intelligently and offer calm finishing in important moments. That sort of profile has value, especially in a long season.
The concern, though, is whether he has ever truly owned a role at Liverpool. Too often, Gakpo has felt like a useful answer to several questions, rather than the definitive solution to one. If Iraola wants pace, intensity and directness in wide areas, then it is understandable that Ngumoha and Diomande would appeal.
The Diomande angle is fascinating. If Liverpool can use Gakpo to strengthen their position in negotiations, then it would at least feel strategic rather than reactive. Supporters can accept big exits when there is a clear plan behind them.
The key issue is balance. Liverpool cannot simply trade experience for potential and assume everything will click. If Gakpo leaves, the replacement must be ready to impact games immediately. This summer has to be about raising the ceiling without weakening the floor.
