Liverpool have dismissed head coach Arne Slot after a disappointing fifth-place finish in Leeds United’s first season back, which included two draws against the Reds.

The club said in a statement that Slot had left his role with immediate effect and that the search for a successor was under way, adding that ownership appreciated his achievements and leadership, including compassion following the loss of Diogo.

Liverpool entered 2025-26 as defending champions but ended 25 points behind Arsenal in fifth, though they still qualified for the Champions League.

Leeds, newly promoted, drew 3-3 with them in December then held them 0-0 at Anfield on New Year’s Day.

Slot joined in June 2024 and won Liverpool’s 20th league title in his debut campaign. He was named LMA Manager of the Year and also reached the Carabao Cup final and the Champions League last 16.

This season he oversaw Champions League qualification again and a run to the quarter-finals. The decision has been framed as a change of direction, with Slot departing with gratitude and a lasting legacy.
