Liverpool FC has paid heartfelt tribute to former LFC Women manager Matt Beard, following the announcement of his sudden passing. The club shared its sadness in an official statement on the Liverpool FC website, remembering Beard’s achievements and character during his two spells in charge.
Beard first joined Liverpool Women in 2012, quickly leaving his mark on the club’s history. Under his leadership, the Reds secured back-to-back Women’s Super League titles in 2013 and 2014. He also guided the side into their first UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign – a milestone that cemented his place in the club’s story.
“Matt was not only an extremely committed and successful manager, he was also a person of real integrity and warmth, who will always be remembered with genuine fondness by everyone he worked with at the club,” the tribute read.
Beard left for the United States in 2016, managing Boston Breakers before returning to England with West Ham United Women. His spell in London included a memorable run to the Women’s FA Cup final in 2019. Later, he took charge of Bristol City Women before making his Liverpool comeback in 2021.
Upon returning, Beard oversaw Liverpool’s promotion back to the WSL by winning the FA Women’s Championship in his very first season. That achievement reaffirmed his ability to rebuild and inspire squads, ensuring his legacy at the club remained strong.
Beard parted ways with Liverpool Women in February, but his impact was already indelible. His influence extended beyond results; he built connections with players and staff that reflected his reputation for loyalty and authenticity.
Liverpool concluded their tribute with the words: “Rest in peace, Matt.”
