Liverpool's rebuild continues and a massive spend looks set to happen. Fabrizio Romano has revealed the spark for it.

Liverpool spent over £450m in the summer - an incredible spend unlike anything we've ever seen before at Anfield. This was the Reds capitalising on their title win as well as backing Arne Slot fully in the transfer market.

Slot, after all, had won the Premier League with a squad built entirely for Jurgen Klopp. He performed a miracle in pushing the group to the title and fully deserved a squad built for him.

That squad certainly hasn't clicked together as hoped just yet. At the same time, that rebuild isn't yet done and there are a few areas of the pitch where Liverpool haven't touched.

Centre-back is one of those, with Giovanni Leoni's injury leaving the squad light at the back. They also haven't upgraded on the wings at all, given Federico Chiesa simply never gets the nod from the start in a difficult fixture.

And then there's the midfield. It was a revelation for Liverpool last season as Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai all found their feet. Wataru Endo, too, found a new role as a defensive impact-sub.

Once again, however, this is a group of four midfielders that Klopp led the hunt for. 2026 will almost certainly see investment in that area and Fabrizio Romano has revealed the spark for that.

Liverpool's midfield rebuild

Romano said on his YouTube channel that Liverpool plan contract talks with Gravenberch and Szoboszlai. It’s attempt to lock down elite players for their prime years - as well as rewarding them for their progression with the Reds.

But this will only be the start here. Liverpool want to see if they can get solid contracts with the pair before moving onto their potential new midfielders.

And there will be new midfielders. Endo, for instance, is not a long-term option for Liverpool now that he’s 32 and not a regular starter.
