Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo delivered a timely reminder of his quality as he scored twice in the Netherlands’ 2-1 victory over Uzbekistan in New York.
With the World Cup now on the horizon, Gakpo stepped up when it mattered most. The Liverpool attacker converted a first half penalty to give the Netherlands a 1-0 lead and looked set to be the difference between the sides.

Uzbekistan fought back and found an equaliser late in the contest, threatening to deny the Dutch a winning send off ahead of the tournament.
Gakpo had other ideas. Deep into stoppage time, the forward showed remarkable composure from 12 yards once again, scoring his second penalty in the 97th minute to secure a 2-1 success for the Netherlands.

It was an influential display from the Liverpool man, who completed the full match alongside club teammates Ryan Gravenberch and Virgil van Dijk. All three started and finished the final friendly before the World Cup begins.
The Netherlands can now turn their attention to their opening group stage clash against Japan, featuring Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo, in Arlington this weekend.
Elsewhere, Kieran Morrison remained an unused substitute during Northern Ireland’s 3-1 defeat to France. Kostas Tsimikas also featured internationally, coming off the bench in Greece’s narrow 1-0 loss to Italy on Sunday.
