Liverpool will almost certainly keep one star around after a massive change of plans. The Reds have had to tear things up.
Liverpool had a plan for their defence this season. That plan is now in tatters after two moments went the wrong way for the Reds.
Firstly, they were supposed to add Marc Guehi to their group. Just about everything was done for the deal expect Crystal Palace's formal go-ahead.

The Eagles pulled out of the deal at the last minute, ending that idea for Liverpool. They could go back in for Guehi in January but things are now a lot more difficult as he enters the final six months of his contract.
So with Guehi off the table for now, Liverpool planned on seeing out the season with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni. That plan is now also done.
Leoni's serious knee injury will keep him out long-term. Potentially for the entire season, with Arne Slot claiming he'll miss a year.
Liverpool, then, have had a massive change of plans over the last month. Enough that it will force one star to stay.
Gomez was supposed to leave Liverpool in August, with a move to AC Milan firmly lined up. However, Liverpool's failure to sign Guehi cancelled the deal - though, the Italians have kept in contract and hope to seal it in January.
Now, we don't see how that's possible. Gomez is now more important than he was back in August after Leoni's injury.
There's now no obvious replacement, either, as it's likely that Guehi sees out his Palace contract to become a free agent in the summer. But even if Liverpool did sign the Palace captain, it would be to replace Leoni in the squad - not Gomez.
And so the only way we see a deal happening for Gomez to leave is if two centre-backs arrive in January. That's certainly not impossible but it feels highly unlikely.
Especially if Guehi does see out his contract. Liverpool would then need one arrival to replace Leoni in the squad and then another to replace Gomez - surely eliminating any chance of Guehi also joining in the summer.
Unless, of course, Konate leaves with the end of his contract. Perhaps that opens the door in the the summer?
But as things stand, it's incredibly difficult to see how Gomez is allowed to leave. He looks destined to remain for at least the season as Liverpool try and finally get a handle on their centre-back situation.
