Liverpool attacker Harvey Elliott says he will consider his future this summer.

The 22-year-old will travel to Slovakia for the Under 21 European Championship with England this month.

But it comes after a challenging season for the youngster. Liverpool enjoyed an incredible first season under Arne Slot as they stormed to the Premier League title but their league form made it challenging for some players to earn playing time.

Elliott is amongst those in the squad that only played limited minutes for the Reds last season. The 22-year-old said: “It’s been a bit different. The game time, as you said, hasn’t been as much. It’s been a difficult season I would say.

“It’s been a season where, especially in the Premier League, we’ve dominated. And coming into a team that’s doing so well, after my injury, I think it was always going to be hard but I’d hoped I would have got some more opportunities.

“But football is football, this is what happens. I think as a player, from what I’ve learned from being around everyone for ages, you just have to accept it, you have to keep working hard, keep trying. Like the PSG game, when opportunities do come, you just need to make the most of them.”

“We’re all players that want to play football, it’s as simple as that.

“We’re not content with what we have. We always want to have more. We want to gain more experience and more importantly, we want to play for the team that we support, that we love. There’s no better feeling than that.

“At the same time, I think we need to be mature about the situation. We need to reflect and see if there’s anywhere that we could have done better.”

Elliott made just two league starts last season and only played a total of 371 Premier League minutes. In the previous two campaigns he made 11 and 18 starts respectively, playing more than 1,350 minutes in both.

The England U21 international admitted: “I think it’s just a situation that me and the team on my behalf have to have a conversation about because I’m coming into an age now where I’m 22, I’m going to be 23 next season and I don’t really want to be wasting years on my career because it’s a short career.

“You don’t know what’s going to happen. Touch wood it doesn’t, but injuries and things, it could shorten it.

“I think it’s a situation that, as I’ve said before, I need to reflect on. I need to see if I’m content in doing what I’m doing and how can I improve as a player because that’s the most important thing. That’s the main thing, really. I just want to improve and be the best possible version of myself and the best player I can be.

“If that’s to go somewhere else, then it’s a decision that I’m going to have to make and I just need to see what happens.”

The boyhood supporter of Liverpool continued: “It’s a situation that me and my team need to reflect on, to look at and see what the best path is for me.

“It could still be Liverpool. Nothing makes me want to leave. I love the club, I love the fans, the team. I support them as well.

“But as I said, most importantly, it’s just about what’s best for my career. I just need to make that decision.”

Although he is a youngster in Liverpool’s ranks, Elliott is now one of the most senior players in England’s U21 squad. He is part of Lee Carsley’s squad for the upcoming U21 Euros, and is one of just two that remain in the team from the last tournament.

In 2023, England won the U21 Euros for the first time in 39 years. They are now heading to Slovakia with hopes of repeating their triumph and retaining the title.

Elliott insisted: “We have one aim and one goal, which is to win it. I’ll try as hard as I can to make sure that happens.”

On his role as a more senior player in the squad, he added: “I’ve always took it on board. I’ve always took that role in my stride.

“I don’t think it’s a case of me having to bring anyone up. Everyone’s got quality here.”
