Liverpool will be looking to rediscover their title-winning form when they host rivals Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.
The Premier League champions headed into the international break on a run of three straight defeats across all competitions.
Liverpool (4-2-3-1): Mamardashvili; Szoboszlai, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo; Isak.
Arne Slot’s men limped to league losses against Crystal Palace and Chelsea, either side of a Champions League humbling away to Galatasaray. But they have a perfect home record this term. And they will attempt to maintain it in front of the Sky cameras at 4.30pm.
Slot has a number of decisions to make, including whether to hand a recall to Florian Wirtz, who was benched for the defeat against Chelsea. But Hugo Ekitike could be the man to miss out in the front four.
Liverpool started the week with a number of high-profile players battling to be fit for the clash with Man Utd. But Slot looks set to have most of his big names available.
The Reds remain without goalkeeper Alisson, who is out with the hamstring injury he sustained in the Champions League. Giorgi Mamardashvili will start in his place. While Alisson is absent, Ryan Gravenberch and Ibrahima Konate look set to feature.
Gravenberch limped out of the Netherlands’ win over Finland with his own hamstring issue, but is expected to take his place in the starting line-up. Slot described the midfielder as “completely fit” in Friday’s press conference.
Konate, meanwhile, picked up an injury against Chelsea which forced him out of France’s squad. But he was in line to train prior to Sunday’s contest and should partner Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the defence.
With Gravenberch fit, Slot could choose to keep Dominik Szoboszlai at right-back, with Milos Kerkez expected to hold on to his place on the left side of the defence.
Further up the pitch, misfiring Mo Salah will remain in situ on the right wing. But Slot could opt to deploy Wirtz in behind Alexander Isak, with in-form Cody Gakpo on the left flank instead of Ekitike.
Much has been made of Salah’s sluggish start to the campaign. But the pressure is also starting to mount for Isak. The British-record transfer from Newcastle United is yet to catch fire following his deadline-day move.
With no pre-season minutes under his belt, Isak was always likely to need time to adjust to life on Merseyside. And six appearances in all competitions have returned no more than a Carabao Cup goal over Southampton.
Isak failed to find the net on international duty, either, as Sweden’s hopes of World Cup qualification took a significant hit with back-to-back defeats. So he’ll be eager to make his mark against the Red Devils.
Slot has backed his big-money signing to come good, telling reporters to judge him on what he does from now on.
“I think now he has had his five, six weeks of pre-season which is normal for every player, especially if you have been out for three or four months,” Slot said.
“Fitness-wise he is close to the level he should be and we can judge him in a fair way from now on.”
