Liverpool look nailed on for the Premier League title.
Liverpool are favourites to win the Champions League.
Liverpool are favourites to win the Carabao Cup.
All of those things are true.
However, I think a lot of Newcastle United fans are getting far too carried away with this idea that Liverpool are the invincibles.
Back in December, Newcastle United played Liverpool at St James’ Park.
The Scousers were the better team in the second half but the Geordies had the upper hand in the first half, the eventual 3-3 draw was fair. Certainly, Newcastle United didn’t deserve to lose.
However, I wanted to look at what has happened more recently…
Liverpool match results in 2025
Liverpool 2 Man U 2 (5 January 2025)
Spurs 1 Liverpool 0 (8 January 2025)
Liverpool 4 Accrington Stanley 0 (11 January 2025)
Forest 1 Liverpool 1 (14 January 2025)
Brentford 0 Liverpool 2 (18 January 2025)
Liverpool 2 Lille 1 (21 January 2025)
Liverpool 4 Ipswich 1 (25 January 2025)
PSV 3 Liverpool 2 (29 January 2025)
Bournemouth 0 Liverpool 2 (1 February 2025)
Liverpool 4 Spurs 0 (6 February 2025)
Plymouth 1 Liverpool 0 (9 February 2025)
Everton 2 Liverpool 2 (12 February 2025)
Liverpool 2 Wolves 1 (16 February 2025)
Villa 2 Liverpool 2 (19 February 2025)
The last 14 Liverpool results in all competitions:
Played 14 Won 7 Drawn 4 Lost 3
Of those very very recent results, as well as losing to Plymouth and only drawing with Everton, you have to say that Liverpool were very lucky to beat Wolves, then had to come from 2-1 down last night to draw with Villa who should have won it late on.
When comparing form…
Newcastle United in their last 14 matches in all competitions:
Played 14 Won 11 Drawn 0 Lost 3
None of this is to then claim that Newcastle United will definitely win.
However, at the same time I don’t understand why anyone thinks that Newcastle United will automatically lose.
From what I have seen, Liverpool haven’t been outstanding and playing teams off the park. More a case of having been very consistent and usually playing good to very good, then that more often or not, enough to get the win, or at the very least not lose.
Moving into 2025 though, I think Liverpool have faded a bit, they aren’t hitting quite the same levels and the consistency not always there. Maybe as well the luck is evening itself out as well, plus they are starting to pick up a fair few injuries, something they seemed very lucky with in the first half of the season.
I think Newcastle United can have a real go at them at Wembley (and next Wednesday night for that matter at Anfield).
Of course though, I think fair to say that we would all take defeat at Anfield if that somehow guaranteed victory at Wembley.
Friday will also see who Liverpool get in the last 16 of the Champions League.
They will be away to either PSG or Benfica on the 4th or 5th of March, then on either Tuesday 11th or Wednesday 12th March, Liverpool have the key second leg at Anfield as they try to make the last eight of the Champions League.
Potentially (hopefully) only four days before facing Newcastle United at Wembley.
