There is a midfield rebuild coming to Anfield this summer.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has been relying on the same cast of midfield characters for a couple of seasons now.

He is beginning to get a diminishing return from some of them - with Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch a long way beneath their 2024/25 Premier League title-winning best.

Factor in a complicated contract scenario for Curtis Jones - as well as uncertainty over the fate of Wataru Endo - and you can see why Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes are eyeing midfielders.

The likes of Adam Wharton and Eduardo Camavinga have been named as potential Liverpool targets.

But if a report in Foot 01 is to be believed the outgoing Premier League champions are looking to complete a deal for a player they let go last summer.

Liverpool are trying to sign Tyler Morton

Tyler Morton, 23, was left on the outside looking in during his only season working under Arne Slot.

Following successful loan spells at Blackburn and Hull it was expected that the homegrown midfielder would have a part to play in the first team.

But Slot was never convinced by the England under-21 international throughout an injury-hit campaign. And with a contract running out in 2027 the decision was taken to cash in last summer when Lyon came calling.

The cash-strapped Ligue 1 side paid less than £10m for the elegant No6 - who has gone on to become one of the most impressive midfielders in Europe this season.

The report now claims that Liverpool are already REGRETTING their decision to let the Wallasey-born midfielder leave and are trying to get him back to Anfield this summer.

Untouchable Tyler Morton going nowhere

Lyon will require sales - even before their Champions League fate is decided - with Morton described as an untouchable.

The Merseysiders therefore have got no chance of attracting Morton back to Anfield this year - and will have to instead watch on enviously as he goes from strength to strength under Paulo Fonseca.

“While the club must raise more than €20 million before the end of June, Tyler Morton has been deemed untouchable,” the report reads.

“By the end of June, Lyon must generate at least €20 million to satisfy the DNCG (French football’s financial regulator).

“His impact has convinced Lyon’s sporting department to build the team around him, and they have no intention of selling him this summer, regardless of circumstances.

"This will come as a blow to Liverpool, who had been linked with a move to bring him back.

“For context, the Reds—who already regret letting him leave for such a modest fee given his development in Lyon—have been mentioned among several Premier League clubs interested in signing him next summer.”
