Liverpool rarely lack clarity when it comes to long term planning, yet this summer presents a familiar question in a slightly different form. With talks progressing over a new deal for Ibrahima Konate, the club must decide whether continuity outweighs opportunity, especially with Jarell Quansah waiting in the wings with a reported buy-back clause.
There is growing confidence at Liverpool that Konate will commit his future to the club, but not everyone is convinced this is the right call. Former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison has taken a more ruthless view, suggesting the club should pivot away from Konate and revisit a familiar name.
“I’d be tempted to let [Konate] go and bring Quansah back,” he said.
It is a bold suggestion, but not without merit. Quansah, developed within Liverpool’s own system, represents both continuity and potential resale value. Reports indicate a buy back clause in the region of £70m remains in place, giving Liverpool control over his future.
Quansah’s development away from Anfield has not gone unnoticed. At 23, he is entering a stage where promise must translate into consistency, and Liverpool will be monitoring closely.
While the current defensive group appears well stocked, with Virgil van Dijk still leading the line, timing could be everything. Liverpool may not need Quansah immediately, but that does not mean they will not need him soon.
The structure of the squad suggests planning beyond the present. If Konate signs, he joins a core that already includes emerging options and experienced heads. That leaves little room for immediate reintegration, but football squads evolve quickly.
Looking ahead to 2027, the picture becomes clearer. Van Dijk’s contract situation will come into focus, and by then, Liverpool may require a new leader at the back. Quansah could be positioned to step into that role, particularly if other departures reshape the squad.
Equally, Konate entering his peak years would offer continuity during that transition. This is where Liverpool’s decision becomes less about choosing one over the other, and more about sequencing.
For now, the club appears committed to securing Konate’s future. Yet Hutchison’s comments serve as a reminder that planning in football is rarely linear. Quansah remains part of the conversation, whether immediately or further down the line.
Liverpool’s strength in recent years has been their ability to think ahead without losing sight of the present. This situation, involving Ibrahima Konate and Jarell Quansah, is another test of that balance.
