Alexander Isak made his Liverpool debut tonight against Atletico Madrid as the Reds started their Champions League campaign at Anfield.

The £125m record signing, who arrived from Newcastle United on deadline day, was left out of the squad for Sunday’s 1-0 win at Burnley as manager Arne Slot said the Sweden international would need time to get up to speed.

But Isak came straight into Slot’s starting line-up as Liverpool made a lightning start, with two goals inside six minutes. Mohamed Salah’s low free-kick was deflected in off the returning Andy Robertson, before Salah doubled Liverpool’s lead by finishing off a clever move.

Atletico responded just before half time as Marcos Llorente, who scored a dramatic winner for the visitors at Anfield in their 2020 Champions League last-16 tie, pulled one back in front of the Kop before Isak was replaced by Hugo Ekitike before the hour.
