The Carabao Cup final takes centre stage at Wembley this afternoon with the first major silverware of the English domestic season up for grabs. Holders Liverpool are targeting a memorable double with a huge lead in the Premier League title race, though will be wounded after suffering a rare setback with their midweek Champions League exit on penalties at the hands of PSG.
The Reds are still favourites to win their first trophy under Arne Slot, though have to cope without the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold today. Newcastle have their own share of key absentees with Anthony Gordon suspended and Lewis Hall and Sven Botman out, though Alexander Isak is fit and firing as Eddie Howe looks to lead the club to their first piece of major domestic silverware since 1955.
These sides have met twice already in the top-flight this season, with Liverpool winning 2-0 at Anfield last month after drawing a six-goal thriller on Tyneside in December. Newcastle have not beaten today’s opponents in their last 15 meetings, a run that stretches back to 2015.
