Liverpool broke the British transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz during the summer transfer window. The 22-year-old was acquired from Bayer Leverkusen for an initial £100m - and that fee could rise to £116m depending on bonuses and add-ons.
Wirtz, 22, was under contract at Leverkusen until 2027 - and led his former club to the German league and cup double in 2024. As one of the foremost playmakers in world football, the Germany attacker commanded a top-dollar fee.

His signing was a major power play from Fenway Sports Group - during a summer when the Liverpool owners proved NO player is beyond their reach.
FSG proved that by going after Alexander Isak - whose signing from Newcastle BROKE the transfer record set by Wirtz just weeks previously.
And Liverpool have been tipped to soon repeat their Wirtz trick - for Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise. The France international is 23 and coming to the peak of his powers.
This season the left-footer has scored three goals and added an assist in only three Bundesliga matches. It follows a devastating debut season for FC Hollywood - with Liverpool now tracking the former Crystal Palace standout.
Olise was signed for around £53m last summer - which will prove to be a bargain sum - and is under contract at the Allianz Arena until 2029.
It means Bayern are quite well protected from a transfer fee perspective - but as we saw with Isak, when a player decides enough is enough there is not much a club can do other than facilitate his exit.
Olise fancies a move back to the Premier League - according to various recent reports - and Liverpool as well as Manchester City will be right there for his signature.
Football Insider claims that the winger will go for around the same price as Wirtz - with the Reds soon to be looking for a long-term successor for Mohamed Salah.
“It’s more than probably just Liverpool who’ll be looking at Michael Olise – his career is just going up and up,” the report reads.
“Liverpool, if they are looking to find a long-term replacement from Mohamed Salah, Olise would figure on that list.
“In the current market, you’ve seen players going for £100million – you’ve seen Wirtz go for over £100m, Isak for well over £100m as well.
“Olise is on a long-term contract and a player with so much potential – he’d probably command similar fees.
“It’s not an easy deal to do, but I don’t think Bayern Munich will be counting on losing Michael Olise anytime soon.”
