Liverpool wonderkid set to make first-team debut

Liverpool's exciting wonderkid could be nearing a first-team debut next week.

Alexander Isak picked up a knock against Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this week which forced him off at half-time. He is touch and go for Liverpool's visit to Brentford and it remains unlikely that Arne Slot will risk him for a League Cup game against Crystal Palace.

Slot likes to rotate his team for domestic cup games and it's already expected that he will make a number of changes.

Freddie Woodman is going to get his debut for the first-team, after waiting many months to finally play a competitive game for the Reds.

He might not be the only debutant. Liverpool do have a shortage of attacking options if Isak is unavailable. Given Slot is unlikely to play Hugo Ekitike with a Premier League fixture to be concerned about at the weekend, nor will he probably risk Cody Gakpo nor Mo Salah, his options will be Federico Chiesa and Rio Ngumoha.

Jeremie Frimpong has played on the wing but he's also ruled out, which means Slot is going to have to promote some players from the academy.

With Chiesa and Ngumoha likely to start this game on the wing, Slot will need to bring in a number nine and there's one very obvious option.

Among the top of the list when it comes forward at the club's academy is 17-year-old Joshua Sonni-Lambie. With Jayden Danns and Will Wright both injured, Sonni-Lambie has emerged as the top candidate to earn a promotion for the Palace game and make his debut.

The youngster has 12 goal contributions in just 11 games and already has four goal contributions in three matches for the club's U19 team in the UEFA Youth League.

Quick and great with his link-up play, it would be a bold move for Slot to start him. However, if Isak remains unfit and Ekitike is very much going to be needed in the Reds' game against Aston Villa, the Dutchman will have no choice.

Even if he's only on the bench, there's a good chance Sonni-Lambie will be involved in some capacity in the League Cup game.

He's very much earned that promotion based on his performances in the last few months.

The youngster has been developing his game for some time in the club's academy after being spotted at grassroots level in England, and he's widely regarded as one of the most promising young attacking talents at Liverpool.

Injuries across the board means he has a unique opportunity and it's up to him to make it count.

Some of the club's best players announced themselves amid first-team options being injured. Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen both benefitted from the club's senior options being ruled out to make their debuts in the League Cup.

If Sonni-Lambie can start his career in the same way they did, he will be someone very much worth keeping an eye on. Especially because Liverpool do need a third no.9 option behind Ekitike and Isak, and Danns has struggled with a lot of injuries recently so Sonni-Lambie could quickly come in and occupy his spot.
