Ifeanyi Ndukwe transfer latest as Liverpool assess loan options amid work permit wait

Liverpool are advancing plans to send Ifeanyi Ndukwe out on loan after the teenage centre-back emerged as one of the early standouts of pre-season under Andoni Iraola.

The 18-year-old joined from Austria Vienna this summer after a £2.6 million agreement was struck in January, and his performances have quickly generated interest across the market. There is now significant demand for the defender, with clubs in Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium and Denmark all showing interest as Liverpool consider the most suitable next step.

For now, a temporary move looks necessary. Ndukwe is unable to feature competitively for Liverpool this season because of work permit issues. He does not currently hold enough points to secure a Governing Body Endorsement, while Liverpool’s available Elite Significant Contribution slot has already been allocated to fellow 18-year-old centre-back Mor Talla Ndiaye.

Liverpool loan plan taking shape

Liverpool’s objective is clear. The club want Ndukwe playing regularly in an environment that supports both his development and his chances of qualifying for a future work permit. Having made one brief senior appearance for Austria Vienna late last season, he now needs consistent first-team football.

That has sharpened focus on a loan exit for the full campaign, with recruitment and football operations staff working through the options alongside the player’s camp. Style of play is understood to be a major consideration, with Liverpool keen for the youngster to continue in a system that mirrors the demands of Iraola’s approach.

Danish clubs in contact for Ndukwe

Ndukwe’s representative, Georg Lederer, has now confirmed discussions are ongoing, including with sides in Denmark. “I can’t say which clubs we are in dialogue with, but I can confirm that we are in dialogue with Danish clubs about Ifeanyi Ndukwe,” he said.

He added, “The only thing I can say is that we are not talking about the top clubs in Denmark.”

There are also conversations beyond Scandinavia. As Lederer explained, “We are also talking to several foreign clubs, but right now we need to decide, in collaboration with Liverpool, where Ifeanyi will fit best.”

Work permit route remains central

Any move will hinge on more than reputation or league level. “We are looking at several different parameters. First and foremost, it is about Ifeanyi getting a lot of playing time, and then Liverpool are also looking at what type of football clubs play, as they want him in a high-pressing defence, so it is a bit like what you see in Liverpool.”

One point appears settled. “Since Ifeanyi has just arrived at Liverpool, it is of course a loan agreement without an option to buy, but for now I can’t say much more.”

That leaves Liverpool with a straightforward priority, finding the right club, the right tactical fit and the right volume of minutes to bring Ndukwe back into contention as quickly as possible.
