Liverpool’s hopes of Champions League qualification suffered another blow at the AMEX as they were 2-1 by Brighton.
Danny Welbeck opened the scoring on 14 minutes, heading in at the back post from Diego Gomez’s header back across goal.
But Liverpool levelled before the break through Milos Kerkez, who seized on Lewis Dunk’s poor header back towards his own goal to dink the ball over Bart Verbruggen.
Welbeck added his second shortly before the hour mark, however, to put the home side back ahead.
Yankuba Minteh’s cross to the back post was directed back across goal for Welbeck to have the simplest of finishes.
The defeat sees Liverpool remain in fifth, but having played a game more than Chelsea who are just a point behind them and play Everton at 5:30pm on Saturday.
They were also dealt a big injury worry during the game, with Hugo Ekitike forced off early on.
