Liverpool's next MASSIVE problem is about to hit them all at once | OneFootball

Most Liverpool fans will probably be hoping that their problems will be coming to an end by the end of this season.

The 2025-26 campaign has been a complete write-off for the Reds with the Anfield outfit currently trying their hardest to even secure a Champions League spot.

Mohamed Salah has put in one of his worst seasons ever and Ibrahima Konate has also not been up to scratch which has made things even harder for Liverpool to get a decent run of form together.

And, since it seems like Arne Slot and Richard Hughes are going to put the club through another rebuild, many more problems are going to arise.

However, there's one issue in particular that could derail things completely in L4.

Liverpool have hardly any homegrown players among their ranks

Over the last few years, Liverpool's team has been filled with a mixture of homegrown and non-homegrown players.

However, as the Reds had a massive clear out in the summer that saw the likes of Caoimhin Kelleher and Harvey Elliott exit Anfield, their homegrown options shrunk.

And now, seeing as though Joe Gomez and Curtis Jones seem to be on the cusp of leaving Liverpool, their lack of homegrown players could become a real issue.

Indeed, Slot did try and sign Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo this season but, since both of them chose to join Manchester City, those options were thrown away.

Several English players such as Adam Wharton and Elliott Anderson have been linked with a potential move but, since they could both cost upwards of £100 million, it's unclear whether a move for either of them would be viable.

Of course, some English players could be signed to fill in the gaps but, if the Reds want to be competitive again, they need to ensure that they have world-class players among every area of their squad, otherwise they could end up performing worse than they have this term.

Liverpool need to be smart about the transfers they sanction this summer

Recently, most of the players that Liverpool have been linked with have been Ligue 1 players.

Bradley Barcola, Lamine Camara and Mamadou Sangare are among the main players to have been linked with an Anfield switch this term.

And, while Ligue 1 players are usually an awful lot cheaper to bring in than Premier League-proven players, it doesn't feel like it would be the best move for the club right now.

Jones and Gomez could both leave which means that another two homegrown spots will open up that need to be filled.

Out there options such as Lloyd Kelly could be explored, in Jones' case, there aren't really any decently-priced players available to replace him at the moment.

So, on the face of things, it really makes no sense to move the midfielder on, especially since he's literally been one of Slot's best players when called upon.

Of course, things can change in football and some new homegrown players could start popping up as potential targets but, realistically, the Reds' lack of homegrown talent could become the biggest problem that they've faced yet.
