Liverpool Pre-Season Start Date Set as Andoni Iraola Shapes Kirkby Plans

Liverpool’s summer reset is beginning to come into focus, and the first real point of intrigue is the club’s pre-season schedule. Credit to The Athletic, whose latest reporting has clarified when the senior squad are due back at Kirkby, while also underlining the unique challenge facing new head coach Andoni Iraola.

For now, the academy players are already back at work, and there is a sense of movement around the AXA Training Centre. Several senior names have reportedly made early returns too, with Wataru Endo, Giovanni Leoni and Stefan Bajcetic all seen on site. New arrival Ifeanyi Ndukwe has also been pictured in Liverpool kit for the first time after his £2.6 million move from Austria Vienna, a deal that could yet prove a smart piece of forward planning.

Kirkby return offers Iraola first proper window

The key detail is simple enough. “Pre-season starts at Kirkby on July 14.” That date matters because this is not a normal summer for Liverpool. A World Cup has fractured preparation time, delayed transfer movement and left major players scattered across the globe.

As The Athletic put it, “There was always an acceptance at Liverpool that getting most of their business done early was unrealistic this time around because of the World Cup and Iraola’s need to assess the talent he’s inherited.” That feels like the central point. This first phase is less about grand statements and more about clear assessment, quick coaching and immediate impressions.

US tour fixtures create urgency

Liverpool’s trip to the United States gives Iraola a tight schedule to work with. The Reds face Sunderland in Nashville on July 25, Wrexham at Yankee Stadium on July 29, and Leeds United at Soldier Field in Chicago on August 2. Those matches should offer early clues about shape, intensity and selection.

There may also be more first-team help available than expected. The Netherlands, along with Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo, are already out, while Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak have also seen their international campaigns end. For Iraola, that could be a genuine bonus, more bodies on the grass, more time on the training pitch, and a better chance to put his stamp on Liverpool pre-season before the serious work begins.
