Jurgen Klopp is no longer Liverpool’s manager, but his voice still carries the weight of leadership.

He has used it to defend Trent Alexander-Arnold, the academy graduate who was booed at Anfield after announcing he would leave the club this summer.

Some fans turned on the 26-year-old after it emerged he would not sign a new contract. But Klopp made it clear that their reaction was wrong.

Speaking at a fundraiser, the German admitted he switched off the television when he heard the jeers as Alexander-Arnold came on against Arsenal.

“I could not have been more disappointed at that moment,” he said.

This is what leadership looks like. Not neutrality. Not a shrug. But a principled stand in defence of a player who has given everything to the club since joining at the age of six.

Compare that with Arne Slot’s reaction. The new manager took a middle ground. He said fans were entitled to their opinion and stopped short of condemning the behaviour.

Understandably, Slot may not want to alienate supporters early in his tenure. But there are times when silence or neutrality is the wrong message.

Fans are unpredictable. That is why leaders are needed – to guide the mood, to shape the culture and to push back when the mob gets it wrong.

Klopp did that. Slot did not.

Even Andy Robertson and Michael Owen tiptoed around the issue. Robertson said he could not tell fans how to feel. Owen minimised the booing as a vocal minority.

But when a local lad who lifted the Premier League and Champions League with his boyhood club is booed by the same Anfield he fought so valiantly for, there should be no ambiguity.

Klopp reminded everyone of that.

He reminded the club, the supporters and even his successor what Liverpool is meant to stand for. Loyalty. Memory. Respect.

Slots may win trophies. He may even build a great team. But Klopp is part of Liverpool’s soul because he knew when to fight for what was right.

And when fans lose their way, they need someone to show them the path back. That is part of the job.
