For many months now, Borussia Dortmund and Nico Schlotterbeck have been in talks over a contract extension beyond 2027, but there is no agreement yet.
Recent reports have suggested that Schlotterbeck wants a €60 million release clause for this summer included in his new contract. And speaking on Sky90 on Sunday, Germany legend Lothar Matthäus shared some insight, claiming he “knows” that Dortmund are willing to grant the clause to finalise the contract.
“He absolutely wants the release clause included after the World Cup, hoping that he can use the tournament to put himself back in the spotlight, with a successful run as a starter for the German national team in central defense, so that in the end he might get the chance to move to an even bigger club – possibly with greater recognition than he gets at Dortmund," Matthäus said.
"I think that’s still a point of discussion. And I know that Dortmund would be willing to give him this release clause,” the German World Cup winner added.
“I had a good conversation with [sporting managing director] Lars Ricken and with [sporting director] Ole Book. The talks will continue this week. I think it won’t take much longer before I make a decision.
“I’ve said it all along: of course I can imagine staying. But all the discussions have to be right. Now we’ll see how things develop,” Schlotterbeck said.
