Lazio President Claudio Lotito opens the door for Maurizio Sarri’s summer exit: ‘In life, I’ve learned that everyone is useful, but nobody is indispensable.’
Lazio have failed to qualify for any European competition for the second season in a row, and it’s the first time it has happened during Lotito’s tenure.
Sarri returned to the Stadio Olimpico last summer, signing a contract until June 2028, but expressed his dissatisfaction with the club management after a 2-0 defeat against Roma on Sunday.
“We brought Sarri on a three-year contract, so he has two more years left, with the perspective that we would restart with a focus on rejuvenating the team,” Lotito told Sportmediaset.

“These are considerations we’ve made. In life, I’ve learned that everyone is useful, but nobody is indispensable. We sit eight right now, but I think there are the conditions to start again. This has been an absurd season. I’ve never seen anything like it in 22 years. So many injuries and incidents affected the results. I hope we’ll leave the season behind us to restart with enthusiasm. We’ll get reorganised, hoping to make the fans happy.”
Lazio were imposed a transfer embargo last summer, so they could not sign any new players for the first part of the campaign.
However, when the club were once again allowed to make new purchases in the January window, they also sold second-choice keeper Christos Mandas as well as Matteo Guendouzi and Valentin Castellanos.

Fans are also unhappy with the club’s management and have boycotted all their recent home games, except for one against Milan on March 15 and the Coppa Italia Final last week.
“Not having the fans is not good for a president, but when there are instrumental positions, one makes a virtue of necessity, trying to get the positives,” argued Lotito.
“Unfortunately, fans who pursue personal interests cannot wait. In November 2027, Lazio will regain significant financial power because we’ll complete the repayment of €550m in debt and have €30m in cash to make new investments. Football is not only about investments, but it’s also about ideas, and everyone must be on the same page.”
According to reports in Italy, Sarri is the leading candidate for the Napoli job should the Partenopei and Antonio Conte part ways in the summer after two seasons.
