Claudio Lotito criticised Lazio's protesting supporters and his players over their Coppa Italia final performance. According to The Laziali, the club president delivered a broadside amid ongoing fan protests.
A large section of the Biancocelesti fanbase has blamed the Italian senator for an underwhelming campaign, accusing him of prioritising personal interests over the club. Organised groups have boycotted home matches since January, after key players from Maurizio Sarri's side were sold and replaced with cheaper options.
High-profile supporters have joined in, including singer Tommaso Paradiso, who appeared at this year's Sanremo festival. He wrote an open letter urging Lotito to heed the fans, but the owner told reporters he did not know who Paradiso was.
Lotito insisted his project remains on track, and that Lazio will begin to reap the benefits of their Nasdaq listing and the Stadio Flaminio project in the coming years. When asked about reconciling with supporters, he said it was they who had turned on him.
He accepted results this season have been poor, but argued circumstances worked against the team and said performances improved once he took matters into his own hands.
Turning to the squad, he blamed individual errors and a weak mentality for the 0-2 defeat to Inter Milan in the Coppa Italia final. On Maurizio Sarri, reportedly on his way out, Lotito said the coach still has two years remaining on his contract.
