Lazio president Lotito has placed the Coppa Italia at the forefront in what has become a highly fraught season for the club.
Il Messaggero reports that he has set a bonus worth two million euros to be shared among the players if they win the cup, and adds that Lazio have not missed European qualification in consecutive seasons under his ownership.
The 68-year-old is enduring the most testing spell since buying the club almost 22 years ago, with more than 40,000 supporters signing a petition for his departure. He remains publicly unbowed and, three days after appearing at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, is expected at the Renato Dell’Ara on Wednesday to back his side against Bologna in the quarter-finals.
Lazio are eighth in Serie A, eight points behind sixth-placed Como, who also have a match in hand. Seventh could suffice for Europe, but catching in-form Atalanta, six points ahead, looks difficult.
A cup run appears the likelier route. The Biancocelesti have already beaten AC Milan in the Round of 16 and, if they eliminate the title holders on Wednesday, they would face Atalanta in the semi-finals, edging closer to a first trophy since 2019/20.
