PSG’s goalkeepers live under intense scrutiny. Lucas Chevalier’s early difficulties underline how rarely a first season in Paris is straightforward under QSI. A little over five months in, he has 26 matches and 28 conceded.
According to L'Équipe, 15 goalkeepers have featured since summer 2011. This review covers starting keepers’ debut seasons, excluding Matveï Safonov, who has 17 games so far in 2024-25 after a brief duel with Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Salvatore Sirigu arrived from Palermo in 2011-12 for €3.5m, swiftly displacing Nicolas Douchez and being hailed mid-season as PSG’s standout signing ahead of Javier Pastore. In 2015-16, Kevin Trapp mixed a costly error at Real Madrid with strong nights, yet the position remained unsettled.
Installed by Unai Emery in 2016-17 after loans, Alphonse Areola lost his place after a 1-2 defeat at Guingamp in December and finished the campaign behind Trapp.
At 40 in 2018-19, Gianluigi Buffon shared duties under Thomas Tuchel, his role overshadowed by the 1-3 loss to Manchester United in the last 16. Keylor Navas joined in 2019-20, quickly decisive as PSG reached the Champions League final, and was, without doubt, the most consistent of the QSI era.
Donnarumma arrived free after Italy’s Euros and had to share with Navas, waiting until Ligue 1’s matchday five for his first start. His debut season is recalled for the Bernabéu mistake before Karim Benzema in a 1-3 defeat, yet he was voted Ligue 1’s best goalkeeper despite only 17 appearances.
