Midfield is expected to be the main area of focus for Manchester United in the upcoming summer transfer window, with Casemiro set to depart and Manuel Ugarte struggling to demonstrate his talent in England.

It has been widely reported that United are closely monitoring Carlos Baleba, Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton. However, they are not the only club pursuing this trio of Premier League-proven, technically gifted and athletically strong midfielders.

If United fail to secure Champions League football for next season, Ineos could be forced to target less high-profile names. This is where “shrewd operator” Christopher Vivell’s expertise in talent identification would become crucial.

Manchester United keen on Lucien Agoume

According to Shaun Connolly of Theatre of Red, Vivell has identified several alternatives to complement or act as a safeguard, and one such midfielder is Sevilla’s midfield lynchpin Lucien Agoume.

It is suggested that Agoume is appreciated by both United and Arsenal, who are “intrigued by the idea of adding a physical option with proven pedigree and a desirable engine.”

The 24-year-old Frenchman is one of several shortlisted candidates at United, having been identified as a “destroyer-type” profile.

Agoume’s reasonable market value, believed to be in the region of €30 million, is viewed as an “undeniable bonus.”

Sevilla are open to considering a suitable offer for the combative midfielder, who is under contract with the club until the summer of 2028.

Carlos Baleba remains Man United’s priority

That being said, Carlos Baleba reportedly remains United’s number one target, as the Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder is seen as “the closest stylistic successor to Casemiro while still offering long-term value.”

Furthermore, the Red Devils are understood to be “the best placed club” to sign the Cameroonian, despite interest from Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

Brighton initially directed Baleba’s suitors towards the £115 million fee Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo.

However, it is now reported that a deal could be reached closer to an overall package worth around £70 million.
