Samuel Luckhurst has claimed it’d be ‘utterly illogical’ for Manchester United to keep hold of Casemiro beyond his contract expiring in the summer – despite him scoring a crucial goal tonight.

Indeed, the Brazilian was amongst the eight different goal scorers to etch their names onto the scoresheet in tonight’s rollercoaster 4-4 draw between United and Bournemouth.

Casemiro headed home from a corner in first-half stoppage time to restore the Reds’ one-goal lead, before Evanilson responded almost as soon as play got back underway for the second half to make it 2-2.

The spoils were ultimately shared after over 100 minutes of action at Old Trafford, with United again failing to capitalise on a golden opportunity to move up to the Champions League places against a side who entered tonight’s fixture on a six-game winless run.

After the interval this evening, Casemiro was brandished a yellow card for fouling Marcus Tavernier on the edge of the area, after which the Cherries star converted the free-kick he’d won.

The Brazilian’s booking confirmed that he would be suspended for Sunday’s trip to the West Midlands to face Unai Emery’s in-form Aston Villa side.

It could pave the way for Kobbie Mainoo, who replaced Casemiro in the 61st minute, to be granted his first start of the season at Villa Park.

What does the future hold for Casemiro at United?

Reacting to the veteran’s display on X/Twitter, Luckhurst said: Casemiro has been important for MUFC this season and will probably continue to be, but any notion that they should be keeping him beyond the summer is utterly illogical.

“Gets booked frequently, gives away dangerous free kicks and will be 34 in February.”

Next month, the five-time Champions League winner will be free to talk to foreign clubs over a potential summer move when his contract expires in June 2026 – as will Harry Maguire and Tyrell Malacia (and Tom Heaton, if he fancies it).
