Lucy Bronze says she is still driven by the target of winning a Women’s World Cup – despite a stacked trophy cabinet.

The Chelsea and England superstar has won everything else in the game, including most recently a domestic treble, and a second European Championships.

But, she told FIFPro’s Footballers Unfiltered podcast, she yearns to add that missing medal to her collection, even though she will be 35 when the next tournament comes round.

“The only thing I don’t have is the World Cup,” she said in quotes reported by FIFPro.

“Winning something for England has always been my goal and winning the Euros is amazing, but there is nothing better than the World Cup. I’ve played in three World Cups; I finished fourth, third and second.

“I want to make it to the next World Cup. I’m obviously not the youngest player. I’ll be pushing myself to get there, and I’ve been fortunate enough to go to seven major tournaments for England, why not make it another one?”

Lucy Bronze: The best women’s teams are all still missing something

Bronze reflected on her career path, signing her first professional contract at the age of 21, with Liverpool, when she was paid £6,000 for the year. She added that she was a full-time university student over the course of that campaign, with a part-time job in a pizza parlour, and never thought she would be able to make a living from playing football.

Now, with multiple UEFA Women’s Champions League wins to her credit as well as league titles and cups during her spells with Barcelona, Lyon, Manchester City as well as with Liverpool and Chelsea, it is clear that some progress has been made – but even at the elite level, she says there are still issues that need to be fixed.

“I’ve played for the best women’s teams in the world and they’re not as amazing in the background as you think. They’re all missing something. But that’s just the women’s game and where it’s at. Maybe we don’t share that enough about vulnerabilities or weaknesses because nobody wants to in the real world.”

Bronze has made more than 100 appearances for England since her senior debut in 2013, and also represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games.

A previous runner-up back in 2019, Bronze was nominated for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, finishing ninth. Aitana Bonmati of Barcelona and Spain won the award for the third consecutive year.
