Luís Castro has voiced concern over the tone of criticism of his seven months at Grêmio, warning that disrespect risks fuelling violence. After answering every question in his latest press conference on Sunday, he asked to speak again to address the issue.
According to Globo.com, his remarks were not triggered by a single incident. He is uneasy with how opinions about the team are aired, particularly on social media, and chose to speak after the draw with Fluminense.
Castro said turmoil may drive engagement and that false stories now surface daily. He said information should be checked with the same care as it is chased, and that while criticism is valid, disrespectful attacks breed hate and can incite violence, urging people to mind the limits.
During the press conference he fielded repeated questions about jeers from the stands at full time, despite his praise for the team’s display. He avoided controversy over the reaction and said fan disappointment was natural given the result.
Grêmio host Bolívar at the Arena on Thursday at 19:00, with a place in the Copa Sudamericana last 16 at stake. After a 3-2 defeat in Bolivia, they must win by at least one goal to force penalties, or by two or more to go through.
